Further Hackintosh Details

As promised, here’s a little more detail on what I used when installing Kalyway to our Hackintoshes.

Within the installer, I used these customizations:

As for fixes performed within Mac OS X:

Upon setup and installation of Mac OS X, we had working LAN and basic video out of the box.  Sound needed to be patched via the following kext files.  These were obtained here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=76404

Lastly, we patched the graphics with NVinject 0.2.1 (NVInstaller v.52), which we found here: http://scottdangel.com/blog/?page_id=20.

Before applying any of these fixes, I suggest using Kalyway’s 10.5.3 combo update and following the instructions.  You can find it at your favorite BitTorrent tracker.

Also, before installing the kexts to /System/Library/Extensions, make sure you chown them to the root:wheel user before placing them in the extensions folder.  If you try to do it from within your system extensions folder, you’ll most likely only get permission errors.

As for LAN, make sure you’re using port 2 (the bottom port) if you’re using the same board as I am.  For some reason the ports are reversed when in Mac OS X, and I haven’t been able to get LAN working on the first port.

Lastly, I’d use the graphics fix (NVInstaller/NVInject fix) after applying Kalyway’s combo update, Apple’s software updates, and the rest of the fixes listed above.

    Hey Frank, Nice blog. I'm considering getting the same MB as you GA-EP45-DS3R and was wondering it sound in/out is working for you via the Line In/Out ports? Any static or crackles? Please let me know. Any other pearls of wisdom on building a Hackintosh would be appreciated. THanks!

    Hi Scott, thanks for the comment. The standard headphone line-out (green) works perfectly, but I'm not sure about the line-in since I use a USB headset. I'm also unsure about the coax and optical connectors. Sound works great overall. Initially I heard a lot of 'crispyness' (not crackling), but after fiddling around with which drivers I was using, I was able to get rid of it. It also helped to adjust my iTunes equalization. Overall I'm very happy with this board.

    Thanks, Frank. Much appreciated. I'm on Newegg right now placing my order for my Hackintosh build. I hope I'm getting the right stuff. I'll find out soon enough! I'm kinda spoiled because this will replace an older PowerMac that works perfectly well but it's just slow and obviously not Intel. I will let you know how it goes!

    Hey thanks for all this great information. Just a few more details needed on the install method:

    When you say 'Apple Updates' do you mean the 10.5.4 stand-alone update? or everything other than the system updates?

    When you applied the 10.5.3 combo update, did you choose a specific kernel? vanilla maybe?

    When updating to 10.5.3, you'll want to use the 'Kalyway Combo Update', which you can get a hold of through Insanelymac.com or just about any respectable BitTorrent tracker. You want to use the Kalyway combo update because the Apple version of that particular update will break the kernel. There's instructions included with the update, which will guide you in patching the kernel and updating manually. I chose the sleep kernel, but installed the vanilla kernel when I applied the kalyway update.

    After the Kalyway 10.5.3 update is applied, you can go ahead and install 10.5.4 via Software update. 10.5.5 I'm not sure, I hear it's generally an OK update, but there's a few quirks for some people. I'll be testing this soon, once I get another hard drive to test it on.

    Always check at Insanelymac.com before applying any update that requires a restart.

    Thanks again. Yea i have the Kalyway 10.5.3 update package. And i am glad you mentioned you chose the vanilla kernal on that, because i thought not to select it on my last attempt at upgrading to 10.5.4 and OSX wouldn't boot after that. Next time ill try the vanilla option and see if 10.5.4 is successful.
    I also had to run a script in the terminal (running during the 10.5.4 install) that constantly checks and deletes an 'AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext" file in the extensions folder. This file appears about halfway through the 10.5.4 update and totally screws MOST hackintoshes. But yours seems to be ok? maybe lucky on your CPU choice. This file causes such problems that the Kalyway install removes it completely too.
    I'm almost there, it seems like everytime i get a step closer a new hurdle blocks the way.

    As soon as i install 10.5.4 ill have an attempt at getting my 9800gtx working. I heard that using strings might be better than the drivers you selected? Also be weary, because i heard that the bios on that gfx card is dodgy (google it) apparently it has a badly coded fan controller that shuts it down when it shouldn't thus overheating the cpu on the card. You can simpy remove the blue wire which controls the fan speed. Windows has a driver update that fixed the issue, HOWEVER as you know we on the hackintosh would need our own driver. Real shame that Nvidea dont just update the bios.
    I am really thankful that you have the exact motherboard and graphics card as me because it has given me faith not to give up on this! - as i am a bit of a noob 'hacker'.

    10.5.4 didn't break anything for me, but I did have the vanilla kernel 9.2 installed with the package included with Kalyway 10.5.3. I didn't have to run any shell scripts, just had to use the boot option 'update' after both packages ran. (I ran kalyway update, used force-quit on the installer, then ran the kernel package with the vanilla kernel.)

    I chose this motherboard for the purpose of running a Hackintosh and I chose the Intel E8400 for my CPU simply because it's one of the best deals on the market. Which CPU did you use?

    I am aware of the issues with the 9800GTX. The problem would persist if the card idled around 65c, but with my new case it idles in at 49-54c, and now I don't have an issue. I plan on replacing it, come next series, but until then I just run the fans at 100% when in Windows [for gaming].

    Don't give up, only took me about a day. Granted, I have over a decade of experience on the Mac platform, but getting Mac OS X running on this motherboard was an easy feat and I have confidence that you will succeed.     thanks for your support! i got it all working pretty good, with a 215 Xbench score. Does your graphics info say what card you have? mine does not. But i imagine it is still working.
    I just had one more semi-major problem, my Computer doesn't shutdown, reboot, or sleep properly.. any ideas? i know this is quite a common one, but there is no 1-stop pit-stop for these type of problems. The multitudes of walkthroughs everywhere get confusing.

    As far as the sleep/shutdown/restart issues, that was fixed for me by using this patch: "Latest_11_JUN_AppleACPIPlatform.kext.zip".

    Make a backup of your 'AppleACPIPlatform.kext' file. Then download the patched version and move the new patched 'AppleACPIPlatform.kext' file to your desktop. Then run this command in terminal:

    sudo chown -R root:wheel ~/Desktop/AppleACPIPlatform.kext

    Then proceed to move it to your extensions folder. Hopefully it works out, the system will kernel panic on boot if done incorrectly.

    I have the same board but I used the iDeneb disk which worked perfectly. Along with your patches, I have a great quad core setup thanks to your guide.
